Quick Response (QR) codes are 2D matrix bar codes that are readable by barcode scanner software available for many camera phones and smartphones. QR codes can encode several different types of information for quick retrieval, including text, URLs, phone number, and other data.

How big should my QR code be?

Ultimately, the size of your QR code should depend on the “focal distance” of the scanner. Essentially, how far away do you expect the person to be from your bar code?

A QR code being used in a newspaper ad could measure as small as 0.5” square, because the reader is viewing the ad from a very close distance. On the other hand, a QR code being used on a large window decal could be much larger, to allow viewers to scan it from farther away.

ShareSquare blog provides a great article and rule of thumb on sizing your QR code appropriately:

half an inch bigger for every foot farther away you expect the person to be.  An absolute minimum size of 0.5″ square for the QR code, with no maximum.

Be sure to test your QR codes by scanning them yourself and making sure they work properly from the distance you intend them to be viewed from.

How do I get people to understand the concept of my QR codes?

The popularity of QR codes around the United States is taking off like wildfire. Originally invented in Japan to track parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR codes have already become mainstream throughout most of Asia. The most important thing to remember is that you want people to take an action.

Rather than assuming that you customers will know how to use your QR codes, provide a simple, short explanation on your custom decal or sign. Tell customers to scan the barcode, or at least make sure that they understand that this is the intended action.

1. If you are a part of a larger corporation then you have the ability to let individual stores or regions order only the quantities they want and have them shipped directly from sticviews to the individual locations.
